Cycle tracking can help an individual understand their own patterns, but that does not mean a coach should routinely collect menstrual data from young swimmers.
Personal tracking can be useful
A swimmer may choose to note:
- when a period starts;
- how long it lasts;
- flow changes;
- cramps, headaches or other symptoms;
- how they felt during training.
This can help them notice patterns and explain symptoms to a parent, carer or healthcare professional.
A paper diary or calendar can work just as well as an app for basic tracking.
Team-wide tracking is different
Asking every young swimmer to report period dates to a coach creates privacy, safeguarding and data-protection questions.
It can also make swimmers feel that disclosure is required to be selected, believed or coached properly.
Do not make menstrual disclosure a default condition of participation.
Do not coach from a generic cycle-day rule
Research does not support a simple rule that every athlete should train in the same way on the same day of a menstrual cycle.
A better approach is to ask about current symptoms and readiness:
"How are you feeling today?"
"Is anything affecting what you can do safely?"
If a performance programme collects menstrual data
Higher-performance environments may choose to collect health information as part of a formal athlete-support programme.
That should have a clear purpose, appropriate consent and privacy arrangements, qualified oversight, and a clear explanation of who can see the information and how it will be used.
For children and young people, safeguarding and parental or carer involvement may also apply.
Apps need privacy awareness
If a swimmer chooses to use a tracking app, encourage them and their family to look at how the app handles personal data rather than assuming every app is equally private.
Remember
A swimmer can learn about their own body without surrendering their private health information to the whole coaching team.
Support personal awareness; do not make disclosure compulsory.
