Period Conversations: Supporting Players Confidently

How any coach can support players without making things awkward.

Any coach can support a player who has a period.

What matters most is being calm, respectful and practical.

You do not need perfect words

Try:

“Of course. Do you need the toilet, a product or a few minutes?”

“Would you like me to get another adult?”

“You do not need to give me any more detail.”

Treating the conversation as normal often makes it much easier for the player too.

Do not avoid the subject completely

If every adult behaves as though periods are too embarrassing to mention, players may decide it is safer not to ask for help.

You can acknowledge periods without asking intrusive questions.

Offer choice

A player may be comfortable speaking with you, or they may prefer another coach, team manager, parent, carer or trusted adult. Either response is fine.

Where possible, make sure players know in advance which adults they can approach.

Maintain normal safeguarding boundaries

Use the same professional boundaries you would for any other health or welfare conversation: respect privacy, avoid unnecessary personal questions and follow club safeguarding procedures.

Keep in mind: Coaches support, protect privacy and signpost. They do not diagnose. Severe pain, fainting or significant illness should follow club first-aid procedures and be passed to a parent, carer or healthcare professional.
