A period leak can feel enormous to a young player, especially if blood is visible on football shorts.
How the adults around the player respond can either reduce the embarrassment or make it much worse.
If you notice a leak before the player does
Tell them quietly and privately.
You could say:
“Can I have a quick word? I think you might want to check your kit. There’s no problem — we can sort it.”
Avoid pointing, whispering with other adults or asking a teammate to tell them.
Help them deal with it
Offer access to:
- a private toilet or changing space
- a fresh period product
- spare underwear
- spare shorts if the club has them
- a bag for stained clothing
Ask whether they want a parent or carer contacted.
What if teammates notice?
Do not allow teasing or humiliating comments to become part of team culture.
A leak is not a disciplinary issue and it is not funny at the player's expense. If teasing occurs, deal with the behaviour without making the player discuss their period in front of others.
Can they return to play?
If they have changed, feel comfortable and feel well enough, they can return. If they want more time or feel unwell, support that too.
