Training & Matches: Should I Change What a Player Does on Their Period?

Support the individual rather than applying one rule to everyone.

Do not assume that a player needs different training simply because they are on their period.

Some players feel completely normal. Others experience cramps, tiredness, headaches or other symptoms.

Start with how the player feels today

Ask:

“How are you feeling?”

“Do you feel okay to train normally?”

“Would any adjustment help?”

Possible adjustments could include a short break, temporarily reducing intensity or ending the session if they feel unwell.

Avoid one-size-fits-all cycle rules

There is no single menstrual-cycle training plan that is right for every player, particularly for young players whose periods may still be settling into a pattern.

Do not automatically reduce expectations, change selection decisions or assume poor performance because a player is menstruating.

Symptoms matter more than assumptions

Respond to the individual in front of you. If symptoms are repeatedly affecting training or matches, encourage the player and their parent/carer to seek appropriate healthcare advice.
