A netball tournament can mean several games, a long journey, unfamiliar changing rooms and lots of time away from home. Having your period doesn't mean you can't take part. It just helps to make a simple plan that works for you.

Before the day

Pack enough period products for the whole event and a spare in case your flow is heavier than expected. Include extra underwear or kit and a bag for stained clothing. If you're using a product for the first time, try it before tournament day if possible.

Find out where the venue is, what facilities are available and whether you will have access to your bag between matches. If there are limited toilets, tell your coach or team manager so you can plan opportunities to use them.

Between matches

Use breaks to visit the toilet, change products when needed, eat, drink and rest. You shouldn't feel guilty for taking care of yourself. Some players feel just as energetic on their period; others may need extra breaks or an adjustment to their playing time.

What about match rules?

Court substitutions, stoppages and bench arrangements vary by competition. A coach can help you plan around those rules while taking your wellbeing seriously. You should not be expected to stay on court while feeling faint or seriously unwell.

If you leak or feel unwell

Tell an adult you trust, find somewhere private, and ask for the products or kit you need. If pain is severe, you're bleeding unusually heavily or you feel faint or very unwell, stop playing and get appropriate medical help.

Remember

Being prepared helps, but you never have to apologise for a period happening on match day.
