Whether you play in a school hall, at a leisure centre or at an outdoor court, the toilets and changing facilities may be different every time. Managing your period is easier when you know where to go and can ask for privacy without feeling awkward.
Find out where everything is
Before training or a match, notice where the nearest toilets are. On tournament days, find out which facilities players can use and whether there are bins for used period products. If you cannot find a suitable place to change, tell a coach or another trusted adult.
What should you be able to do privately?
You should be able to change a period product, wash your hands, deal with used products safely and change underwear or kit if needed, without being watched or questioned in front of other players. If facilities don't meet your needs, ask a responsible adult for an alternative.
What about used products?
Wrap disposable products and put them in an appropriate bin. Never flush pads, tampons or wipes down the toilet. If you're using reusable period pants, a suitable waterproof bag can help you carry used items home.
Changing rooms and body confidence
You might feel more self-conscious about your body as you grow. Changing facilities should allow you to manage your period and get changed comfortably, with privacy when you need it.
You can say “I'd be more comfortable changing somewhere private” without having to give a detailed explanation.
What if I need the toilet during play?
Let your coach or an official know, as appropriate. Match substitutions and breaks depend on competition rules, but players' health and hygiene still need to be taken seriously. Planning ahead helps, and urgent needs should never be ignored.
Remember
Privacy and dignity are ordinary needs, not special favours.
