Netball involves running, jumping, sudden stops and changes of direction. If you're wearing a skirt, dress or shorts, you might wonder whether a period product will move, show or leak. There are several options, and none is the “correct” netball product for everyone.
Pads
Pads sit in your underwear and absorb period blood. They may work well during netball if they fit comfortably and stay in place. Some players prefer pads with wings or close-fitting underwear to reduce movement. If a pad rubs, bunches up or feels uncomfortable, another shape or product might suit you better.
Period pants
Period pants have absorbent layers built into the underwear. Some players like the feeling of a secure fit under their kit, either on their own or as backup, depending on the product's absorbency and their flow. Check the maker's instructions and bring a spare pair or a suitable storage bag for a longer day. Regular period pants are not necessarily suitable for swimming.
Tampons and menstrual cups
Tampons absorb blood inside the vagina, while cups collect it. Some players choose them because they are not visible under kit. You do not have to use an internal product to play netball, and no coach or teammate should pressure you to do so.
If you choose one, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, including hygiene, absorbency and changing or emptying intervals. Ask a pharmacist or healthcare professional for help if something is painful or confusing.
What about dresses, skirts and lighter kit?
Different clubs use different uniforms. Whatever you wear, check that your underwear and period product feel secure when you stretch, squat, jump and run. If you want to wear suitable shorts underneath, check your club's uniform or competition rules. You should not have to describe your period to the whole team to ask about kit options.
Try it before competition
Where possible, try a new product during a regular practice or at home, rather than for the first time during a tournament. Pack a spare product and underwear as backup.
Remember
Comfort and personal choice matter more than using any one kind of product.
