How to use a pad
A simple step-by-step guide.
- Open it — Take the pad out and peel off the paper.
- Stick it — Place it inside clean underwear.
- Check comfort — Pull your underwear up and check it feels okay.
- Change and bin — Change every 4 to 6 hours or sooner if full.
Pads come in different sizes. Ask an adult which ones you have.
Quick answer
A pad sticks to the inside of your underwear. It is worn outside the body, not inside the vagina.
Step 1: Get the pad ready
Take the pad out of the wrapper. Peel off the paper backing so the sticky side is ready to attach.
Step 2: Place it in your underwear
Stick the pad to the inside middle part of clean underwear. If your pad has wings, fold them around the underside of the underwear.
Step 3: Pull your underwear back up
Once the pad is in place, pull your underwear back up. It should feel secure and reasonably comfortable.
Step 4: Change it when needed
Change your pad every 4 to 6 hours, or sooner if it feels full, wet or uncomfortable.
Important hygiene tips
- Wash your hands before and after changing a pad.
- Wrap the used pad and put it in a bin.
- Do not flush pads down the toilet.
What if it feels strange?
That can happen at first. Pads come in different sizes and shapes. If one does not feel right, a different pad may feel better.
What if I use a different product?
That is okay. This article explains pads only. Other period products have different instructions, so ask a trusted adult or read the product information before using them.
What if I leak?
Leaks happen. It does not mean you did anything wrong. You may need to change your pad sooner or try a different size.
Ask Luma
You could ask: “How often should I change a pad?” or “What should I do if my pad feels uncomfortable?”
Final reassurance
Using a pad gets easier with practice. The first time may feel new, but it is just a skill you can learn.
