A little preparation can make periods at swimming feel much less stressful.
You do not need to carry a huge emergency kit. A few useful things in your swim bag can be enough.
The basics
Think about packing:
- a period product suitable for swimming;
- your usual pad, period underwear or other product for before and after swimming;
- spare underwear;
- a spare swimsuit if you have one;
- shorts, a robe or comfortable clothes for poolside and afterwards;
- a spare or dark-coloured towel if that helps you feel more relaxed;
- a small waterproof or washable bag for wet or stained clothing;
- water and a snack for longer sessions, if appropriate.
You will not need every item every time. Pick what makes sense for you.
If you have not started your period yet
You can still make a small "just in case" kit.
A pad, spare underwear and a small bag can be useful if your first period starts away from home.
If you swim regularly, it can also be helpful to talk to a parent or carer about what you would want to use in the water if your period starts on a swimming day.
Keep products easy to reach
Put period products in a small pouch rather than at the bottom of your swim bag.
That way you can take the pouch to the toilet without carrying everything with you.
Check your kit occasionally so you do not discover that the only product in it has been there for a year or that your spare underwear no longer fits.
Before you leave home
Ask yourself:
- Am I on my period or expecting it soon?
- Do I have a swimming-suitable product?
- Do I have something dry to wear afterwards?
- Will I be at the pool for a long time?
- Do I know where the toilets are?
If you are going to a gala or new venue, pack a little more than you would for an ordinary lesson.
What about medicine for cramps?
Only carry or take medicine in the way agreed with your parent or carer and according to the product instructions, your doctor's advice and any club or school rules that apply.
Do not share medication with other swimmers.
If you use reusable products
Bring a waterproof or washable bag so you can take used period underwear, swimwear or reusable products home discreetly.
Follow the care instructions for your product.
If something is missing
Do not panic.
Ask a trusted adult, pool staff member or coach whether emergency products are available. Another swimmer or parent may also be able to help.
Being caught without a product is inconvenient, not a disaster.
Remember
The aim of a period kit is not to make you worry more.
It is there so you can think "I have what I need" and get on with swimming.
