A simple guide to period flow, what light, medium and heavy can mean, and when bleeding needs extra help.
Quick answer
Period bleeding can be light, medium or heavy. Your flow may also change during your period. The important thing is learning what is usual for you.
What does “flow” mean?
Flow means how much period blood you have. Some people have a light flow. Some have a heavier flow. Some have heavier bleeding for the first day or two and then it gets lighter.
How do I know what is normal for me?
You can notice:
- how often you need to change your period product
- whether bleeding is light, medium or heavy
- how many days your period lasts
- whether you leak through clothes or bedding
- whether you feel tired, dizzy or unwell
Do I need to measure the blood?
No. You do not need to measure it exactly. A simple note like “light”, “medium” or “heavy” is enough.
Ask for help if bleeding feels too much
Tell a trusted adult if you are soaking through products quickly, leaking a lot, passing large clots, feeling faint, or bleeding stops you doing normal things. Ask Luma
You could ask: “How do I know if my period is heavy?” or “How often should I change my period product?”
Final reassurance
Flow can be different from person to person. You do not need to compare your period with a friend’s. If you are worried, asking for help is the right thing to do.
